Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

DR Andrew j. HAYDUKE

A breast lift (mastopexy) addresses sagging and uneven breasts, drooping nipples and wide areolas (the dark area surrounding the nipples). This procedure recreates a more youthful shape and lifts your breasts to a higher more appealing position. Breast lifting also makes your areolas appear more youthful since a breast lift usually reduces your areolar size. After childbirth, massive weight loss, or simply with age, breasts tend to droop and sag downwards. In some cases, the droop may be quite severe and the breasts may even look deflated. If there is too little breast volume, a breast augmentation with an implant is usually recommended together with your breast lift. If you have too much breast volume to begin with (too big), then a breast reduction might be recommended in addition to your lift.

WHEN TO CONSIDER A BREAST LIFT

  • If pregnancy, nursing, gravity, weight gain or loss, normal aging, and heredity have taken a toll on the shape of your breasts, resulting in a saggy appearance
  • If Dr Hayduke thinks that breast implants alone are unlikely to achieve the contour you desire
  • If the tissue surrounding the nipple or areola has become stretched
  • If your areolas are widened and/or distorted (asymmetric)

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A BREAST LIFT?

If you’ve become increasingly unhappy about the sagging of your breasts, you may wonder what surgery can do. Don’t be surprised if your surgeon suggests combining breast augmentation or breast reduction with your lift. These additional procedures may be necessary to achieve your ultimate cosmetic goals. After your private consultation with Dr. Hayduke, he will clearly explain what he recommends based on your particular breast anatomy and your cosmetic goals.

The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider a breast lift:

-Your breasts are pendulous (droopy) but adequate in size.
-Your breasts lack substance or firmness.
-Your nipples and areolas point downward, especially if your nipples/areolas are positioned below your breast crease (inframammary fold).
-Your breasts appear different from each other; one breast may appear well positioned while the other does not.
-Your breasts are not equal in size or shape.
-You are finished with childbearing and breast-feeding and are unhappy with your breast’s sagginess.

If you plan to have children, you may wish to postpone cosmetic breast surgery. Pregnancy may stretch the breasts and reduce their size, compromising surgical benefits.
